By the time Steve came to the podium with his Crystal Ball Report in hand, I already knew we were in for a treat.  As the last person to speak at Digipalooza, I figured he was saving some great tidbits for himself.  I wasn’t disappointed!  He said that Overdrive Overdelivers – and that seems to be true.  So here goes:

1.  Overdrive is focusing on going mobile.  They are developing a mobile edition of their webpage for use on iphones and other devices.  Once there, users may check on holds and other tasks easily.

2.  Remember the Sony E-Reader – Well, with the new Adobe EPUB format, Overdrive users will be able to download e-books in that format into the Sony E-Reader.  Steve cautioned that not all e-books using the older PDF format will work, but to try them, especially the text-only ones.

3.  Web 2.0 Strategies – – There are over 3 million desktops with the Overdrive Media Console installed on them.  Overdrive is exploring ways to add readers’ groups, chat alerts, IM and other social networking applications to their software.

4.  Licensing Options – Overdrive is looking at possible subscription access to weekly radio programming and/or popular magazines for downloading in e-format.  In addition, even a pay-for-view movie licensing model is being considered.

With our heads practically exploding with “what ifs”, we left Cleveland and Digipalooza to return to our member libraries and spread the good news about the future of digital media.  It was a stimulating conference and the ideas and enthusiasm I returned home with will enable me to start putting some “best practices” into reality.  Thanks, Steve, for a memorable weekend!
